What is Hospice Care

Hospice care services are available to all people of all ages with a life expectancy of generally six months or less to live.  You need not to be acutely ill to receive hospice care and it is not necessary for you or your loved one to be homebound to receive this care.

The emphasis of hospice care is to alleviate pain and other distressful symptoms and improving quality of life for the patient, as well as emotional support for the family.

Under the Medicare Hospice benefits any medication and medical equipment, such as a hospital bed, are covered reducing the financial burden on families and loved ones.

Though many people assume hospice care is solely for people with cancer, in reality less than 50% of hospice patients have a cancer diagnosis.

Hospice services may be requested by:

  • Patient
  • Physician
  • Family member or friend
  • Other health care professional

Following are signs to consider hospice:

  • A gradual decline in the patient’s level of functioning is observed
  • Increasing visits to emergency room, hospital or doctor’s office
  • The disease is progressing or spreading
  • The condition is life-limiting and a cure is not possible
  • Patient needs help with two or more activities of daily life
  • Patient’s level of functioning declines in spite of therapy
  • Patient loses interest in eating or may have stopped eating completely.  Unintentional weight loss continues
  • Patient has end-stage dementia and is no longer ambulating and/or eating
  • Patient voices a desire for comfort care
  • Family or caregivers desire help with end-of-life issues
  • Care is becoming more difficult to manage

Hospice Care may be paid in the following ways:

  • Covered by Medicare and Medicaid
  • Most private insurances
  • Nursing home patients covered by Medicare or Medicaid receive hospice at no additional charge
